아가야, 엄마가 오늘은 영어로 태교 동화 한 편을 들려 주려 한단다.

In the middle of a plaza, there stood a statue of a happy prince.

광장의 한 가운데에 행복한 왕자의 동상이 있었습니다.

The statue was covered with gold. 동상은 황금으로 덮여 있었습니다.

It had sapphire eye, and the handle of its sword was decorated with rubies.

눈은 사파이어로 되어 있었고, 칼자루는 루비로 장식되어 있었습니다.

Everyone in the town would look up and say, "What a beautiful statue! Look at the shiny sapphire eyes!" “ 참 아름다운 동상이야! 저 빛나는 사파이어 눈 좀 봐” 마을 사람들마다 동상을 올려다보며 이렇게 말하곤 했습니다.

One rich man mumbled, "I want a statue that looks just Like that one."

“나도 저 동상과 똑같이 생긴 동상이 있었으면 좋겠군.” 한 부자가 중얼거렸습니다.

Leaves stirred in the wind one autumn night.

어느 가을 밤, 바람에 나뭇잎이 흩어지고 있었습니다.

A swallow flew over the plaza. 제비 한 마리가 광장위로 날아올랐습니다.

All of its friends already flew off to the warm south.

다른 제비 친구들은 따뜻한 남쪽 나라에서 겨울을 지내기 위해 벌써 날아갔습니다.

But the swallow was left behind. The swallow was very tired.

하지만 이 제비만은 뒤에 남겨졌습니다. 제비는 몹시 피곤했습니다.

It flew over the plaza several times looking for a nice place to spend the night.

제비는 광장 위를 몇 번 날며 잘만한 곳을 찾았습니다.

Then it saw the statue of the happy prince.그때 제비는 행복한왕자의 동상을 봤습니다.

"Oh, good. I will spend the night beneath the statue's feet."

“잘 됐어. 오늘 밤은 저 동상의 발밑에서 지내야겠다.”

The swallow tucked its head underneath its wings.

제비는 날개 밑에 머리를 밀어 넣었습니다.

Just then, it felt a raindrop on its head.

바로 그 때, 제비의 머리 위에 빗방울이 떨어졌습니다.

"It isn't raining, is it? That's funny. The sky is strewn with stars." the swallow thought. “비가 내리나? 이상하네. 하늘에는 별이 총총한데.” 제비는 생각했습니다.

The swallow looked up at the sky, it felt another raindrop.

그러나 제비가 고개를 들어 하늘을 쳐다보자 비가 또 한 방울 떨어지는 것을 느꼈습니다.

The swallow could not believe it. Falling on the swallow's head were not raindrops.

제비는 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 제비의 머리 위로 떨어진 것은 빗방울이 아니었습니다.

They were tears! Tears were falling from the prince's eyes.

그것은 눈물이었습니다! 왕자님의 눈에서 떨어지는 눈물이었습니다.

"Your Majesty, what is wrong?" “왕자님, 어떻게 된 겁니까?”

"Oh, swallow. When I was alive, I never shed a tear because I was always happy.

“제비야. 내가 살았을 땐, 늘 행복했기 때문에 눈물을 흘린 적이 없었어.

But now that I stand high in this plaza, I can see all the poor people, me sad."

“그런데 이 높은 곳에 서 있으니, 불쌍한 사람들이 다 보여서 슬프단다.”

"Even now the child that lives across the street is ill.

“지금도 길 건너편에 사는 아이가 아프단다.”

but his mother has no money to buy him medicine.

그런데 어머니는 돈이 없어 약도 사주지 못하고 있어.

Oh, Swallow, won't you take a ruby from my sword and drop it at their doorstep?"

제비야, 내 칼자루의 루비를 떼어 저 집 문 앞에 떨어뜨려 주지 않겠니?”

With its beak, the swallow pulled out a ruby from the statue's sword and took it to the ill child's house.

제비는 부리로 왕자의 칼에 있는 루비를 뽑아내어 앓고 있는 아이가 사는 집으로 갔습니다.

The child's mother cried happy tears. 아이의 어머니는 기뻐하며 눈물을 흘렸습니다.

the next day, the swallow got ready to fly south.

다음 날, 제비는 남쪽 나라로 날아갈 준비가 되었습니다.

"You can stay one more day, can't you? There is a young writer.

“제비야, 하루만 더 있다가 갈 수 있지, 그렇지 않니? 저기 책을 쓰고 있는 젊은 작가가 있어

He is so poor that he has nothing to eat and no wood for fire you will go and give him my sapphire eye, won't you?"

그는 너무도 가난해서 먹지도 못하고 불도 피우지 못하고 있어. 그에게 내 사파이어 눈을 갖다 주렴. 그래 주겠니?”

"What! You want me to give him your eye? Oh, no! I couldn't do that!" said the swallow. “뭐라고요! 눈을 떼어주라고요? 오, 말도 안 돼! 전 못 해요.” 제비가 말했습니다.

"I'll be okay. Please, I beg you." “난 괜찮아, 제발 부탁이야”

Finally, the swallow took one of the prince's sapphire eyes.

마침내, 제비는 왕자의 눈에서 사파이어 하나를 떼어냈습니다.

He dropped it into the young man's attic room.

제비는 그것을 젊은이의 다락방 안에다 떨어뜨려 주었습니다.

That night, the prince saw a fire burning in the attic, and he was happy.

그 날 밤, 그 다락방에 난롯불이 타는 것을 보고 왕자는 기뻐했습니다.

The swallow decided that it would fly south the next day no matter what.

제비는 내일은 무슨 일이 있더라도 남쪽 나라로 날아가야겠다고 결심했습니다.

But when the sun came up, the prince begged the swallow to stay again.

하지만 다음 날 해가 뜨자, 왕자는 제비에게 머물러 달라고 다시 애원했습니다.

"I'm sorry, Swallow, but I beg you once more."

“미안해, 제비야. 한 번만 더 내 부탁을 들어줘.”

"There is a poor little girl. She dropped all of her matches in the ditch,

“저기 성냥을 파는 불쌍한 어린 소녀가 있어. 그 애는 성냥을 도랑에 빠뜨리고 울고있어,

and she is crying. You will go and give her my other sapphire eye, won't you?"

내 나머지 한쪽 눈의 사파이어를 저 소녀에게 갖다 주렴, 그래 주겠니?

"But you will not be able to see. I can't do that."

“그럼 왕자님은 볼 수 없게 되잖아요. 그렇게는 할 수 없어요.”

"I will be okay. Please, Swallow." “난 괜찮아. 제발 제비야.”

The swallow had no choice but to take the prince's other sapphire eye and fly to the little girl.

제비는 하는 수 없이 왕자의 남은 사파이어 눈을 가져다 소녀에게 주었습니다.

The little girl's tears became tears of happiness.

소녀의 눈물은 기쁨의 눈물이 되었습니다.

The swallow flew here and there. 제비는 이 곳 저 곳을 날아다녔습니다.

It saw many things and told the prince about them.

그리고 자기가 본 많은 것들을 왕자에게 말해주었습니다.

"Those poor children must not have a home. They are not wearing shoes.

“저 불쌍한 아이들은 집이 없나봐. 신발도 신지 않았군.

How cold and hungry they must be!" 얼마나 춥고 배가고플까!”

"Look at the children sitting by window. Their faces are so pale.

“저 창가에 앉아 있는 아이들 좀 봐. 얼굴이 너무 창백하군.

They must be sick. Their clothes are all torn. How cold they must be!"

어디 아픈가 보다. 그런데 옷이 다 떨어졌네. 얼마나 추울까!”

After listening to the swallow, the prince said, "peel the gold from my body and give it to the poor children." 제비의 얘기를 들은 왕자님은 말했습니다.

“내 몸에서 왕금을 떼어내어 불쌍한 애들에게 나누어 주렴.”

From that day on, the swallow took bits of gold from the statue to help people.

그 날부터 제비는 동상에서 떼어 낸 황금 조각으로 사람들을 도왔습니다.

It gave the gold to poor people.

제비는 가난한 사람들에게 황금 조각을 가져다 주었습니다.

Everyone smiled happily again. 모든 사람들이 다시 행복하게 미소 짓게 되었습니다.

But the gold on the prince's body was all peeled off.

그러나 왕자의 몸에 있던 황금은 다 떨어져 나갔습니다.

It was a terrible sight. 왕자의 동상은 흉한 모습이 되었습니다.

Winter came, and it began to snow. Snow fell on the ugly statue.

겨울이 와 눈발이 날리기 시작했습니다. 보기 흉한 왕자의 몸에도 눈이 내렸습니다.

"It's so cold." said the swallow in a small voice.

“아아, 추워.” 제비가 가냘픈 목소리로 말했습니다.

The swallow shook because of the cold. 제비는 너무 추워서 떨고 있었습니다.

"I have to go now." “이젠 가야 할 것 같아요.”

“Will you to south?” "남쪽 나라로 가는 거니?"

"No, Your Majesty. I am going to a land even farther away. Good-bye, Your Majesty." “아니에요, 왕자님. 그보다 더 먼 나라로. 안녕 왕자님.”

With that the swallow fell to the prince's feet.

제비는 그렇게 말하고는 왕자의 발밑으로 떨어지고 말았습니다.

And at that moment, something broke. It was the prince's heart.

그리고 그 때 뭔가가 깨졌습니다. 바로 왕자의 심장이었습니다.

The next morning, people walked across the plaza.

다음 날 아침, 사람들이 광장을 가로질러 지나갔습니다.

They looked up at the statue of the happy prince.

사람들은 행복한 왕자의 동상을 올려다봤습니다.

They said, "What happened to the prince's statue?"

“왕자의 동상에 무슨 일이 있었지?” 그들은 말했습니다.

"Why is it so ugly?" “왜 이렇게 흉한 거야?”

One rich man said, "Let's get rid of that ugly statue and raise a new one."

한 부자가 말했습니다. “저 흉한 동상을 없애고, 새로운 동상을 세웁시다.”

Other people shouted, "Yes!" The people took the happy prince's statue down.

“그럽시다!” 다른 사람들이 소리쳤습니다.

They took it to a factory to melt it.

사람들은 행복한 왕자를 공장으로 가져가 녹였습니다.

But strangely, the prince's heart did not melt.

그런데 이상하게도 왕자의 심장은 녹지 않았습니다.

The people threw the prince's heart and the swallow away.

사람들은 왕자의 심장과 제비를 함께 버렸습니다.

That night, the townspeople were fast asleep when a beautiful angel came down from heaven. 그 날 밤, 하늘나라에서 아름다운 천사가 내려왔을 때 온 마을 사람들은 깊은 잠에 빠져 있었습니다.

The angel came to take the most precious things back to heaven.

천사는 이 세상에서 가장 귀장한 것들을 하늘나라로 가져가기 위해서 왔습니다.

The angel flew around the town until it came to a house.

천사는 마을을 날아다니다가 한 집에 이르렀습니다.

All the other houses were dark, but there was light coming out of this house.

다른 집들은 모두 깜깜했지만, 이 집만은 불빛이 새어 나오고 있었습니다.

The angel flew down closer to the house and heard a boy and his mother talking.

천사는 좀 더 집 가까이로 날아가서 한 소년과 그의 어머니가 나누는 이야길 들었습니다.

"Mother, where do you think the gold came from?"

“어머니, 황금이 어디에서 왔을까요?”

"I don't know, dear." “나도 모르겠다. 얘야.”

"I think someone very rich and very kind sent the swallow with the gold to help us, mother." “제 생각에는 아주 부자이며 친절한 누군가가 우리를 돕기 위해서 황금과 제비를 보내 주신 것 같아요. 어머니”

"I do, too. I can't tell you how thankful I am, for it was the swallow and the gold that saved us." “나도 그렇게 생각한단다. 내가 얼마나 고마운지 말로 다 표현을 못하겠구나. 그 제비와 황금이 우리를 살려 줬으니까.”

The angel said, "The two most precious things are the Prince's heart and the swallow."

“가장 귀한 두 가지는 왕자의 마음과 이 제비야.” 천사가 말했습니다.

And so the angel flew back to heaven with the broken prince's heart and the dead swallow.

천사는 왕자의 부서진 심장과 제비와 함께 하늘나라로 올라갔습니다.
