City Mouse and Country Mouse

사랑하는 아가야! 오늘은 엄마가 어렸을 때 많이 들었던 <서울 쥐와 시골 쥐>라는 동화를 영어로 들려줄 거야. 예전에도 그랬지만 지금도 도시와 시골은 여러 면에서 차이가 많이 나거든. 이 이야기 속에서도 두 마리 쥐가 서로 다른 환경에서 살아가는 이야기가 잘 나타나 있으니 즐겁게 들어주면 좋겠구나. 그럼 이야기를 시작해 볼까?

Country Mouse and City Mouse are friends. 시골 쥐와 서울 쥐는 친구입니다.

Country Mouse lives in the country. 시골 쥐는 시골에서 삽니다.

City Mouse lives in the city. 서울 쥐는 서울에서 삽니다.

One day, Country Mouse writes City Mouse a letter.

어느 날, 시골 쥐가 서울 쥐에게 편지를 씁니다.

His letter says, "Please come to visit me in the country. I miss you very much."

‘나를 보러 시골에 와. 너무 보고 싶다.’ 시골 쥐가 편지에 씁니다.

So City Mouse gets dressed and goes to see Country Mouse.

그래서 서울 쥐는 옷을 차려입고 시골 쥐를 보러 갑니다.

The two mice are very happy to see each other.

두 쥐는 서로를 보고 무척 반가워합니다.

Country Mouse prepares dinner. 시골 쥐는 저녁 식사를 준비합니다.

He sets the table with rice, beans, and dried fruit.

시골 쥐는 쌀, 콩, 그리고 말린 과일 열매로 상을 차립니다.

City Mouse is disappointed. 서울 쥐는 실망합니다.

“Rice and beans! Is this all you eat?” asks City Mouse.

“쌀과 콩! 이게 다야?” 서울 쥐가 묻습니다.

(City Mouse) “I like bread and cheese. I don’t like rice and beans!”

(서울 쥐) “나는 빵과 치즈를 좋아해. 나는 쌀과 콩은 좋아하지 않아!”

Country Mouse is sorry that City Mouse does not like the food.

시골 쥐는 서울 쥐가 음식을 좋아하지 않자 미안한 마음이 듭니다.

(Country Mouse) “Do you like to take walks? Let's go for a walk.”

(시골 쥐) “산책은 좋아하니? 우리 산책하러 나가자.”

The two mice go for a walk. 두 쥐는 산책을 나갑니다.

They are almost outside. 그들은 거의 밖에 다다랐습니다.

They hear, "Meow, meow, meow."그들은 “야옹 야옹 야옹” 소리를 듣습니다.

The sound gets closer and closer. 소리는 점점 더 가까워옵니다.

“A CAT!!!” scream Country Mouse and City Mouse.

“Thank you for inviting me.” says Country Mouse.

Country Mouse is excited. 시골 쥐는 신이 납니다.

Country Mouse is in bed. 시골 쥐는 침대에 누워 있습니다.

“Tomorrow I go to the city. I can't wait.” thinks Country Mouse.

"내일 도시로 간다. 빨리 가고 싶어." 시골 쥐는 생각 합니다.

Knock, knock. 똑똑

“Who is it?” "누구세요?"

“It's me, Country Mouse.” "나야. 시골 쥐야."

“Come in! I'm so glad you came!” City Mouse welcomes Country Mouse.

"어서 와. 이렇게 오니 너무 반갑다." 서울 쥐는 시골 쥐를 반깁니다.

City Mouse shows Country Mouse his house.

서울 쥐는 시골 쥐에게 집 구경을 시켜 줍니다.

(Country Mouse) “Oh, my! Your house is huge.” “와, 집이 아주 크다.”

(City Mouse) "Thank you." “고마워.”

City Mouse shows Country Mouse the kitchen.

서울 쥐는 시골 쥐에게 부엌을 보여 줍니다.

There are many kinds of food on the table. 식탁 위에는 여러 음식들이 있습니다.

Bread, fruit, cheese, cake, and steak. 빵, 과일, 치즈, 케이크, 그리고 스테이크.

“Help yourself, Country Mouse. I eat like this everyday.” says City Mouse.

"많이 먹어, 시골 쥐야. 나는 이런 음식들을 매일 먹는단다." 서울 쥐가 말합니다.

“You are very kind.” Country Mouse says. "넌 정말 친절해" 시골 쥐가 말합니다.

Country Mouse eats a piece of cheese. 시골 쥐는 치즈 한 조각을 먹습니다.

Just then, someone walks into the kitchen.

바로 그 때, 누군가가 부엌으로 걸어 들어옵니다.

(Country Mouse) “Ah!” “아!”

City Mouse grabs Country Mouse. 서울 쥐는 시골 쥐를 잡습니다.

They run to the mouse hole. 그들은 쥐구멍으로 달려갑니다.

Country Mouse shakes in fear. 시골 쥐는 두려움에 떱니다.

‘Maybe the city is not so wonderful.’ Country Mouse thinks.

‘도시는 내가 생각했던 곳만큼 좋은 곳이 아닐지도 몰라.’시골 쥐는 생각합니다.

The next morning, City Mouse and Country Mouse walk around town.

다음 날 아침, 서울 쥐와 시골 쥐는 도시를 둘러봅니다.

Cars come from here and there. 자동차들이 여기저기에서 달려옵니다.

They honk their horns loud. 경적을 시끄럽게 울립니다.

The noise hurts Country Mouse's ears. 그 소리는 시골 쥐의 귀를 아프게 합니다.

Country Mouse misses the peacefulness. 시골 쥐는 시골의 고요함을 그리워합니다.

He misses eating rice and beans. 쌀과 콩을 먹는 것이 그립습니다.

Country Mouse leaves the city. 시골 쥐는 도시를 떠납니다.
