아가야, 오늘은 엄마가 <구둣방 할아버지와 꼬마 요정들>이라는 동화를 영어로 들려주려고 한단다. 낯선 언어라서 우리 아기 긴장할까봐 엄마가 먼저 우리말로 전체 줄거리를 이야기해 준 다음에 영어로 들려줄 거야.

이 이야기 속의 주인공인 할아버지는 구두를 만드는 일을 하시는 분이야. 그 할아버지는 할머니와 함께 작은 집에서 살고 있단다. 그들은 매우 가난했어. 할아버지에게는 구두를 만들 가죽이 조금 있었는데 어느 날 긴 의자 위에 가죽을 남겨둔 채 집으로 돌아와 잠이 들었거든. 다음날 아침에 할아버지는 구두를 만들려고 구둣방으로 갔다가 깜짝 놀랐어. 아주 놀라운 일이 벌어져 있었으니까. 어제 두고 온 가죽으로 밤사이에 누군가가 신발 한 켤레를 만들어 놓고 갔던 거야. 어떤 사람이 들어와 그 신발을 아주 많은 돈을 내고 사갔단다. 돈이 생긴 할아버지는 더 많은 가죽을 샀지. 그리고 긴 의자 위에 가죽을 올려놓고 집으로 돌아갔어. 다음날 구둣방에 나온 할아버지는 또다시 깜짝 놀랐단다. 이번에는 아름다운 신발이 두 켤레나 만들어져 있었단다. 그 신발을 팔아 많은 돈을 번 할아버지는 더 많은 가죽을 사왔겠지. 이런 일이 계속 일어나서 할아버지는 부자가 되었어. 그러던 어느 날 할아버지와 할머니는 구두를 만드는 사람이 누군지 궁금해서 커튼 뒤에 숨어 지켜보기로 했단다. 잠시 후에 꼬마 요정 두 명이 창문으로 들어와 가죽으로 바느질을 하고 망치질을 하면서 예쁜 신발들을 만들어 놓고 구둣방을 떠나는 거야. 꼬마 요정들을 위해 할머니는 옷을 만들고 할아버지는 작은 신발을 만들어 의자 위에 두고 커튼 뒤에 숨어서 요정들을 기다렸어. 그 요정들은 두 분의 선물을 받고 기분이 아주 좋았단다. 그날 밤 이후 요정들은 다시 오지 않았지만 행운이 항상 할아버지와 할머니에게 머물러 있었단다. 아름다운 이 이야기를 이제부터 영어로 들어보렴.

In the morning, the shoemaker wakes up.

He goes to the shop to make shoes.

"Oh, my! wife, wife! come quickly. Come and look!" says the shoemaker.

There is a pair of shoes! They are beautiful shoes!

A man comes into the shop.

He buys the shoes. He pays a lot of money.

Now, the shoemaker has money. He buys more leather.

In the morning, he can make more shoes.

The shoemaker leaves the leather on his bench.

The next morning, the shoemaker wakes up.

He goes to the shop to make shoes.

"Oh, my! New shoes again! wife, wife! Come quickly. Come and see!"

There are two more pairs of shoes. They are beautiful.

People buy the beautiful shoes.

Now, the shoemaker has more money.

He buys more leather to make more shoes. This goes on and on.

The shoemaker is not poor, anymore. He is a rich shoemaker.

"Who do you think help us?" the shoemaker asks his wife.

That night, the shoemaker leaves leather in the bench.

He and his wife go to bed.

But the shoemaker and his wife hide behind the curtain

They watch. Soon, two little elves jump through the window.

They skip and dance to the bench.

They sit down on the bench and start to work.

They sew with needles. They beat with little hammers.

The elves quickly finish the work and leave the shop.

The next morning, the shoemaker says to his wife,

"What can we do for the little elves?"

"I can make some clothes for them."says his wife.

"Then I can make some little shoes for them." says the shoemaker.

All day the shoemaker makes little shoes for the elves.

His wife makes little clothes for them, too.

They leave the clothes and shoes on the bench.

They hide behind the curtain and watch.

That night, the little elves jump through the window again.

They skip and dance to the bench.

They see the little coats, stockings, and tiny shoes.

They clap their hands in joy. They put on the clothes.

They skip and dance around the shop.

Then they jump out through the window.

After that night, the elves never come again.

But good luck always stays with the shoemaker and his wife.
